Bachelorette hopeful - Pizza Entrepreneur?

Meet Denver's Mark Huebner, Bachelorette hopeful

By Michael Roberts

Jillian Harris, a 29-year-old restaurant designer from Vancouver, Canada, was given an especially brutal heave-ho by Jason Mesnick on the last season of The Bachelor -- a move so nasty that Colorado's own Bachelorette prize, Ryan Sutter, felt compelled to weigh in. Fortunately, Harris received a reward for becoming an object of national pity: She's the season five star of The Bachelorette, which launches on Monday, May 18 -- and among her suitors is Mark Huebner, who's described as a "pizza entrepreneur" from Denver.

Hard to tell what that means at this point. Huebner's LinkedIn profile says he's the managing partner of Denver Pizza Company, but there's no website listed for the joint. Instead, there's a link to Motive Branding, located in Cherry Creek South, which describes itself as "an independent marketing agency that offers inventive branding products and services to strengthen the presence of your business among its target audience." But a Google search for "Denver Pizza Company" turns up a small piece of evidence about its possible existence -- namely a Craigslist ad recruiting "Delivery Drivers, Cooks, and Managers at our location in the Golden Triangle located just south of Downtown Denver."

Don't let this one get away, Jillian. Looks like you can get in on the ground floor

4 AM Delivery?

Saw this van outside Normandie's on Jefferson in the Mid-City / Culver City Area. It takes Meatballs to drive around in a van declaring yourself #1 in Los Angeles. Although it delivers till 4 am. I will be the judge Berri's Cafe.

Beach Pizza, No I Will Just Have The Salad

Friday was Beach Pizza in Manhattan Beach. I drove past this joint a week earlier on the weekend while at the beach. I couldn't wait to get my hands on a slice by the looks of the people on the sidewalk I thought this is gonna be good.

What I didn't like. I am not sure how to list the issues I had with this place so I will go in order. (A) Parking sucks. (B) I sat down and waited 10 minutes before I realized that no one was going to take my order unless I went to the counter. (C) A little less attitude little lady behind the counter. (D) Why am I paying now. What if I want another beer do I need to get up and walk up to the counter to order.  (E) THE PIZZA.

What I did like. (A) The Chopped Salad is so chopped you need a spoon to eat it and it is slammin. Well that's it for what I like other then they have beer.

The Chopped Salad pictured above is soooo good.
Taste: The Pizza, were to start. The sausage was that small crumbled kind you find on frozen pizza's that looks like dog food. It was greasy and I was suprised with my IBS and the walk to my car which was parked 1 mile away I didn't soil myself.

The Deal: Beach Pizza is OK if your in the area but don't hold your breath for service. Cash,Credit Card, ATM.

Casa Bianca-Presidential Pizza Pie

Last night was
Casa Bianca in Eagle Rock. I was introduced to this Italian Eatery about 10 years ago and was immediately hooked. Yes I know everybody complains about the 30 minutes to an hour wait but its well worth it!  I always try and get there early to get my name on the list and then  just grab an adult beverage at The Chalet which is just on the next block.

Upon entering Casa B you will notice the many Head Shots of celebrities and musicians that adorn the entry.   You will also be bombarded with groups people and the typical Pizza place decor stuck in the 50's red and white plastic table cloths along with green walls and hanging lamps.  I love this place, it is hands down the one pie in Los Angeles that I use as a measuring stick against all other pies.  Also, for those haters and people claiming it taste's nothing like pies from Chicago you need to recognize. This family business was started by a transplant from Chicago in 1955. The owner's Sam Martorana started making Pizza at Tony's Pizza Chicago. I have also heard that while President Obama was going to Occidental Collage here in LA he would visit Casa Bianca on occasion and liked the Hawaiian style the restaurant served.

Taste: I am from Chicago and as many people are familiar with the Deep Dish they often overlook Chicago's other great pie that is Chicago's Thin-Crust. Casa Bianca on my first visit reminded me of the taste of those thin Chicago pies. Thin and slightly crispy, sauce is spiced and tangy the toppings especially the sausage are excellent. The cheese goes all the way to the end as to not leave a ton of crust. It is also cut in a weird 'Party Cut' that makes these geometric slices. I have not quite figured out why they do this yet but I like the kite shaped slices the best!

The Deal: Casa Bianca is cash only, but there is an ATM inside. Be prepared to wait. They do take reservations for parties of 6 or more.

Vegan Pizza and my Good Friend Tom's Birthday

Its my friend and fellow Igloo Tornado Member Tom's birthday today and he is a Vegan and a great artist so I thought it would be nice to show how to cook a vegan pizza. You can check out Tom's artwork here. I don't know how this thing tastes but it looks damn good.

Recession Style Pizza

To start off the Pizza King blog I thought it would be appropriate on the eve of President Obama's economic recovery speech that I would do my part and help out with the "Recession Style Pizza". This starts out with a generic Safeway Select Thin Crust Supreme pizza. In Los Angeles you can get these almost always on sale at your local Von's or Pavilion's markets. Start out with pre-heating the oven to 400 degrees.  I like to add to the pizza because as with any frozen pizza it tends to be lacking in the cheese department. So I get some mozzarella slices or string string cheese and cut it up placing on top of the meat and veggies. I follow this up with a good size helping of shredded Parmesan cheese. Then its time to get it cooking! The package recommends 15-17 minutes but don't pay attention to this.   Keep a close eye and check on the pizza while it cooks.  I would also recommend rotating the pizza when half way done for even cooking. Once the cheese is getting a little brown it's time to take out and get ready to eat.

Taste: Better than some delivery, if not all corporate delivery (Domino's, Papa Johns,Pizza Hut).  Not only is it less expensive it tastes better. The veggies taste alright, same with the pepperoni and sausage.  So, look people we are in a recession, I am not looking for this thing to taste like heaven but at least it tastes better than dirt and it does.
